There is no single legal or universal answer, because cheating is defined by the agreement inside each relationship, not by a dictionary. An AI girlfriend is a chatbot, not a person, so there's no physical contact and no third human involved. But infidelity has never been only physical, and that's where it gets complicated.

The honest test most relationship counselors use comes down to three questions: Is it secret? Does it replace emotional or romantic intimacy you'd normally give your partner? And would your partner feel betrayed if they found out? If the answer to those is yes, it functions like cheating regardless of whether the 'other party' is human. If you're single, none of this applies, and using an AI companion is simply a personal choice.

The strongest argument that an AI girlfriend can be cheating is the concept of emotional infidelity, redirecting affection, vulnerability, and romantic energy away from your partner and toward something else. AI companion apps are deliberately designed to feel intimate: they remember details, offer constant affirmation, and respond romantically. For some people that becomes an emotional outlet that competes with their real relationship.

On the other side, many users treat these apps the way they'd treat a video game, a journaling tool, or a comfort during loneliness, with no romantic weight at all. The deciding factor isn't the technology; it's the role it plays in your life. A tool you use openly and casually is very different from a secret relationship you're emotionally invested in and hiding.

If you find yourself deleting messages, closing the app when your partner walks in, or lying about how you spend your time, that instinct is telling you something.
